From steel to solutions: The role of the Laser team
The Laser Department is responsible for cutting and bending steel components for IMS’ sliding watertight doors, a cornerstone product used globally. Beyond that, the team delivers precision-cut parts for external customers across a wide range of industries in Norway.
The department primarily processes carbon steel and stainless steel up to 25 mm, and aluminum up to 15 mm, but also handles specialty steels such as Hardox, Domex/Strenx, and heat-resistant grades. This versatility ensures IMS Technologies can meet the most demanding customer needs.
With one of Norway’s largest and most advanced cutting tables, the department combines size and capacity with automation. Automatic loading and unloading systems, coupled with unmanned night cutting, allow for high efficiency, consistent precision, and faster deliveries.
Cutting-edge technology for smarter solutions
Laser technology has advanced rapidly in recent years, and we are committed to staying at the forefront. The adoption of fibre laser technology has significantly increased cutting speed, accuracy, and the ability to handle thicker plates.
Sven Even Hansen, Project manager at IMS Laser, explains: “With the new laser system and fully automated handling, we’re able to push efficiency and quality further, giving us a competitive edge both for our own production and for external customers.”
Innovation at IMS Technologies also means collaboration. The Laser Department works closely with customers to optimize products, ensuring that every project benefits from both technical capacity and tailored solutions.
The people behind the precision
Behind every laser-cut part is a dedicated team of professionals. For them, the most rewarding aspect of the job is seeing an idea take shape as a finished product and helping customers overcome challenges along the way.
A typical day is busy, filled with inquiries on pricing, technical questions, and delivery times. That demands precision, problem-solving, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. “Accuracy and not letting stress take over are essential skills in this line of work,” Sven Even Hansen notes.
For employees, IMS offers a safe and forward-looking workplace where trust and independence are key. Collaboration across departments is strong, with the culture emphasizing that everyone is part of one IMS team. As another colleague puts it: “We don’t see ourselves as separate departments, we all work together as one company”, says John Ingvar Høgbråt, Project Manager IMS Laser.
This culture makes IMS an attractive place to work, with opportunities for apprentices and young professionals to gain hands-on experience with advanced technology in a supportive environment.
Shaping the future of laser cutting
The future of laser cutting in industry is bright. As more complex components are required and customer demands for delivery speed increase, IMS Technologies is well positioned to meet expectations.
“For many customers, delivery time and reliability are becoming more important than ever,” says John Ingvar Høgbråt. “Even though laser cutting has become more common in recent years, IMS Technologies has an advantage in being able to cut and bend at very large sizes. That makes us unique.”
With advanced technology, strong capacity, and a dedicated team, IMS Technologies is ready to continue shaping the future of laser cutting, combining innovation, precision, and people to deliver solutions that matter.
