Engineering potential: How IMS opens doors for future engineers

Real projects, global opportunities

What does it take to grow your engineering career while studying halfway across the world? For Thomas Schandy Kamtsikoudis, a master’s student in Cybernetics and Robotics at NTNU, the answer is clear: flexibility, support, and the opportunity to contribute to something real.

What began as a summer internship at IMS Technologies quickly turned into an evolving career journey. Today, Thomas works remotely from Sydney, Australia, continuing to support innovation at IMS while pursuing academic exchange at the University of New South Wales in Sidney. His story reflects our commitment to empowering young professionals through hands-on experience, global collaboration, and long-term growth.

Started as a summer intern

Thomas first joined IMS Technologies as a summer intern, where he developed software tools to support testing of our watertight doors, one of our core safety products used globally in the maritime industry. Within a short time, Thomas took on larger responsibilities, including participation in a pilot project with DNV to implement sensor-based diagnostics for increased operational safety.

“From the start, I was given real responsibility – not just observation tasks. It challenged me in the best way”, says Thomas.

By giving him ownership and the freedom to explore solutions independently, we helped bridge the gap between theory and practice, a core part of how we support learning and innovation at IMS.

Engineering across time zones

When Thomas left Norway for a year-long exchange in Sydney, our collaboration didn’t stop, it evolved.

We provided a flexible remote work setup, allowing him to continue contributing to active projects while managing his studies abroad. From product automation to R&D, he remained fully involved, even with the time difference.

“Working remotely with IMS from Australia has worked very well. We communicate regularly through Teams and email, and they’ve always accommodated my schedule.”

At IMS, flexibility is more than a benefit, it’s a way we enable great work to happen, no matter where our people are.

Freedom to learn, space to grow

At the core of Thomas’ experience is a work culture built on trust, mentorship, and curiosity. He was supported by senior developers, engineers, and project leads helping him grow his confidence and technical depth.

Working with PLCs, embedded controllers, and custom-developed hardware, gave him a clear view of how cross-functional engineering teams collaborate – from software development to product management.

“The culture at IMS is open and welcoming. People take pride in what they do, and they’re always willing to share their knowledge,” Thomas reflects.

This blend of technical challenge and supportive leadership is what defines our approach to talent development.

Building a future close to home

Although Thomas is still exploring his future career path, his experience at IMS has left a clear impression.

“Knowing there’s a company like IMS Technologies in my hometown doing meaningful work and offering opportunities to grow, makes it easy to imagine building a future there.”
