At IMS Technologies, innovation starts with people. For over 40 years, the company has combined Norwegian craftsmanship with advanced engineering to deliver safety-critical solutions to the maritime and industrial sectors. But the true strength of IMS lies in its people and in the next generation of talent now shaping the future.
One of them is Annika, one of our apprentices. Her story reflects what makes an apprenticeship at IMS both unique and rewarding.
From school visit to career start
Annika’s journey with IMS Technologies began during a school visit with her automation class. The visit sparked her interest in industrial technology, and when the opportunity for an apprenticeship arose, she knew it was the right path.
“I chose to become a panel builder because I find the work exciting, and I enjoy the variety of tasks,” Annika explains.
Her days are never the same. One day she might be wiring or soldering components; another, she could be labelling cables, preparing parts, or assembling entire control cabinets based on technical drawings. What motivates her most is seeing a schematic transform into a fully functioning product.
Building skills that last
Since starting her apprenticeship, Annika has gained valuable skills in reading wiring diagrams and mechanical drawings. These are competencies that will follow her throughout her career. But the experience has given her more than technical knowledge.
“What I like most about being an apprentice at IMS is learning new things every day, being part of a strong team, and having supportive colleagues,” she says.
The work environment and collaboration across departments have made Annika feel at home. Looking ahead, she hopes to stay with IMS after completing her apprenticeship – perhaps even pursuing another certificate.
Why IMS invests in apprenticeships
For IMS, apprenticeships are about building the future. HR Manager Tuva explains:
“Apprenticeships are an important way to develop future talent, secure needed competence, and contribute to society. Apprentices bring new perspectives, energy, and updated knowledge, while also strengthening our teams. The mix of youth and experience creates a valuable dynamic.”
IMS provides apprentices with hands-on training, skilled mentors, and opportunities to grow. They also participate in regional apprentice networks, where they can share experiences and build connections with peers. Many apprentices continue as full-time employees, developing their careers within the company.
Supporting apprentices is also part of IMS’ values. “One of our core values is Welcoming & Generous. Every apprentice gets a mentor, a clear training plan, and full integration into both the daily work and the social environment,” Tuva emphasizes.
Building tomorrow’s industry talent
For Annika, the apprenticeship is only the beginning. With strong technical skills, valuable experience, and a supportive team, she is already building a future in industrial technology.
As Tuva summarizes: “Investing in apprenticeships is about much more than today’s needs. It ensures knowledge is passed on, secures future recruitment, and gives young people the chance to build meaningful careers. It also shows that IMS is a company that invests in people, and that’s something we are proud of.”
